The Loved Ones (2009)
Director: Sean Byrne
Story: Brent (Samuel) is not coping well with the loss of his father, six months earlier, in a freaky traffic accident. He alienates himself from his mother, and resorts to cannabis and self-mutilation to assuage some of the torment that he feels. Despite this he still plans to go to the high school dance with his girlfriend Holly (Thaine). Another girl, Lola Stone (McLeavy), asks him out but he politely refuses. Lola does not take lightly to the rejection and, together with daddy (Brumpton), arranges her own party.
So where’s the Romance? This film is definitely not for the squeamish as it crosses the torture porn line quite frequently. However it is well-made, the story is engaging and, although a tad predictable, it explores the dark side of ‘No, thank you’.
