Unfortunately, not all was bliss for little Louise. At nine years of age she was abused by a neighbour whom she later used to refer to as either “Mr Flowers” or “Mr Feathers”. To make matters worst, when she confessed it to her mother, the latter put the blame solely on her daughter, accusing her of leading him on.
This horrendous experience had a damaging and lasting effect on Brooks. Her myriad of lovers (including an affair with Charlie Chaplin and a one night stand with Greta Garbo), her seemingly ambiguous sexuality, her iconic sensual film roles – it seemed that for the rest of her life, Brooks orbited, and possibly encouraged, a negative attitude towards sexual pleasure. In fact, at one point, she claimed that she never loved anyone.
